Learning Object Development

Development of Learning Tool

Let us step through the methodology of developing a Learning Tool, you are able to see how I conceptualized, planned and implemented an effective learning tool online. Step by Step of documents I have created and feedback or constructive criticism is appreciated.

Implementation Part 2:

Week 1 & 2:
Personal Learning and Reflection

Here is what I got up to this past 2 weeks:

Planning - Design of Learning Object
Graphically lay out each scene in a rough draft (1 hour 30 mins)
 Create a brief summary of structure (20 mins)
 Course Learning Outcomes to be developed as a part of plan. (20 mins)
 Journal Entry (5 Mins)
*MILESTONE*(Planning Completed!)

What I have learnt and how I have learnt it from this weeks Development:

Changes to the Planning and Why:
I didn't manage to find the time allocated to this project to graphically lay out each seen in a draft copy. I did not completely lay out every scene and did a rough draft on a piece of paper in front of me of the common structure of your average screen, the rough draft is seen below re-developed in paint to show the proposed design of a normal page of content.

Communications Process:
As I am not developing this learning object for anyone in paticular there have been no communications.

Week 3

Here is what was completed in week 3:

Phase 1 Implementation
 Read Course Outcomes and develop scenarios to demonstrate each individual outcome listed.(Planned Exercises) (1 hour 30 mins)
 Develop a PowerPoint document and import a full deck of card images. (15 mins)
 Journal Entry (5 Mins)

Phase 2 Implementation
Use the planned scenarios to recreate a power point as if playing a game, Make sure each PowerPoint exercise is saved in one File. (2 hours)
 Journal Entry (5 Mins)
*MILESTONE* (Student Exercises Completed!)

What I have learnt and how I have learnt it from this weeks Development:

Changes to the Planning and Why:
Playing a game I found with the power point was not suitable as it does not randomize the card, I did not manage to find a way the learner could place a variable amount for betting and therefore removed this feature from the development of the object.

Communications Process:
As I am not developing this learning object for anyone in paticular there have been no communications.

Week 4

Phase 3 Implementation
 PokerStars Interface Topic Development

o Screenshots to all be taken and saved in a folder
o Wiki Documentation to be made – Upload Screenshots with documentation and references.
o Copy and paste into a power point file
o Go through the power point and summarize everything into short sentences create each slide.

Phase 4 Implementation
 Texas Hold’em rules and how to play
       o Play Poker
       o Video to be recorded
       o Screenshots to be taken
o Wiki Documentation to be created on the wiki
o Video and images to be added for full content
o Links to be made to each thing referred to in the wiki.
o Summarize into a power point

Phase 5 Implementation
 Texas Hold’em Beginner Tournament Strategies (5 hours)
o Find external references on the topic
o Create Wiki Documentation with videos describing what needs to be done.
o Link all references which have wiki pages to each other within the wiki.
       o Videos, Screenshots

o Summarize into a power point

What I have learnt and how I have learnt it from this weeks Development:

Changes to the Planning and Why:
I had problems finding how to edit the wiki properly, time is precious and using my time to learn how to do these aspects of the wiki was not a priority, so I have moved back the wiki development until the core part of the course has been completed, so that by the due date of the learning object, I will have a structured course to show for my efforts. Power point files were completed all in this phase of  development as a direct result of this change.

Communications Process:
As I am not developing this learning object for anyone in paticular there have been no communications.

Week 5

Phase 6 Implementation
 Texas Hold’em End Game Head to Head Strategies (Tournament Gameplay)(5 Hours)
o Find External references on the topic

o Create Wiki Documentation and Link
      o Videos Screenshots
o Summarize into a power point.

Phase 7 Implementation
 Addiction to Gambling Problems section (2 Hours)
o Find references in relation to this
o Wiki and Small power point containing 10 slides.

Deployment Week 5

Deployment
 Put together Learning object into One Massive PowerPoint
 Develop a Menu Page which jump directly to the different topics
 Research Deployment options to online platform
 Deploy to the choice of online platform best suited for this learning object.
 Make each individual PPT available for download
 Make the one big PPT available for download
 Make sure Wiki is working properly. Test all Links and information references.

 Journal Entry (5 Mins)

What I have learnt and how I have learnt it from this weeks Development:

Changes to the Planning and Why:
Phase 7 wiki and small power point was not needed as all, powerpoints are completed, I have a total of 67 power point slides with course related information, I still need to develop each weeks introduction video and tutorial as a result of previous changes to planning.

Communications Process:
As I am not developing this learning object for anyone in particular there have been no communications.

Ethical and Accessibility Issues:

Ethical Issues: My topic is on gambling which raises an issue of is the topic even ethical to teach as it is possible that people get addicted to gambling and playing poker. However this game is not just chance based, there is a lot of skill involved in how to play, which is why you get the same people winning championship series and online, it is why some people are able to play poker for a living and others just lose out on their money.

Information relating to the use of the Poker Stars software instead of full tilt poker or another of the poker softwares are also an issue that needs to be considered as it could affect the gameplay or types of players who use the software.

As the course deals with real money, it is possible that students lose their real money prior to the final assessment, this needs to be addressed at the start of the course which will be done now, where I state that if you do not have enough real money left by the due date for the final assessment you will not be able to take part and get a result of 0. This is an ethical issue in itself, but shows the students need for will power when playing poker and assists in gambling addictions, weeding out those that may have future troubles.

Accessibility Issues: My course is a topic on gambling which means that if your workplace/Institute is using a browsing filter and you would like to view some of the course information or try to complete the course in a location which does not allow gambling OR gaming sites to be accessed, information and software access will be a problem. This can be sorted out by using your own personal computer in a home location or wherever you will be using an internet connection to play poker in the first place.

Technology and Technical Learning:

Technology Map:

Technical Problems Encountered: It took a very long time in the wiki to learn how to embed a powerpoint and keep file sizes to a minimum so that learners may have full access without using too much of their bandwidth which is a problem from where I am located in New Zealand where our ISP's bill us on speed AND amount of data we use over a certain period of time.

Teaching and Learning Effectiveness:

Pedagogy In Practice:

Possible Expansion of Interactive E-Book

The wikia which I have hosted my Course on has been enabled to let registered users who have signed up with Wikia edit the pages, this brings some concerns along with some possibilities, I promote and emplore people to add topics to this subject and extend the weeks of the course, togethor we could build an open source course which is truly incredible, if you are reading this post, you have access to all the planning information and the goals and resources for how this course was made, look at what the course needs how it was done and model any pages you decide to make for the course on what has been done, or re model everything to look 10x better, edit course information and wiki pages to give more detail or just tell me where I went wrong if I did. The technology used allows for expansion by everyone in the world. Lets do this .
